Bonaire NAOB 5% Increase Protest

Elvis Tjin-Asjoe from AKIB (and Tjin N.V. and BonaireLive) gives a rousing speech about the damage the tax increase will do to Bonaire.

Over 10% of the island population showed up for the tax protest - many with signs as well as pots and pans to bang on.

Virtually all shops were closed during the tax rally - a strong sign of the business community's adamant stance against the new tax, and a flyer from BONHATA confirmed that the tourism sector also supported the protest.

Commissioner Nochi Willem adds his voice to the protest.

It was estimated that between 1,200 and 2,000 people showed up for the impromptu tax protest.

And CURO and its dive operator members were there two - a half dozen dive boats with dive operations staff cruised around the harbor near Wilhelmina Plein to support the protest.
