August 31 - September 6, 1998

This part of the InfoBonaire Web site features the contents of our special Bonaire E-NewsTM weekly e-mail news broadcast. To be added to our Bonaire E-News mailing list, please send a message to add-news@InfoBonaire.com.This week's Bonaire E-News articles are:

Coral Life Cycles
Just a quick reminder that during the week of Sept. 7th, expect to see a number of corals spawing between 7-10pm. On the 7th and 8th, it's likely that elkhorn and staghorn corals will be doing their thing, while the end of the week should features some of the small star corals procreating.

Procreation of corals is something to be appreciated, but there may be trouble ahead in terms of the existing coral around Bonaire. Bonaire's water temperatures are already unusually high for this time of year (late October usually features the highest temperatures), and reports have started filtering in of stressed corals. One divemaster has reported that brain corals around the island are changing to a shade of blue as their symbiotic algae react to the high water temperatures (85-87 degrees Fahrenheit, 29.5-30.5 degrees Centigrade). This could be a precursor of an island-wide bleaching event, much like that which devastated corals around Bonaire a few years ago. We'll keep you posted.

Hotel News - Sunset and Flamingo
(Courtesy of Port Call, Bonaire's only weekly printed news in English)

Last Friday’s auction for the land, buildings and furnishings of the Sunset Beach Hotel was postponed, probably for at least 2 weeks. There were no bidders at the asking price of NAƒ 10 million. According to our source, there are very interested investors who will spend the next weeks in negotiations with their investment partners and the mortgage holder. The next auction should result in a final sale. Meanwhile the current majority owner, Hugo Gerharts, reportedly has not given up hope of refinancing the hotel’s debt, estimated at NAƒ 15 million.

Bonaire government and labor leaders met with the management of the Divi Hotel chain last week in Miami to discuss the future of the Divi Flamingo Beach Hotel. It was reported that in management’s eyes the hotel has fallen on bad times and they were reluctant to make further investments in the property. They did agree to review the matter and come back with a plan in about a month. The Divi Flamingo Hotel was once the jewel in the crown of the Divi organization, but the lack of maintenance and improvements has resulted in a decline of quality and bookings have fallen.

Colorful Walls
It's been tough to miss, especially if you drive north along Kaya Gob. N. Debrot towards Hato. What was once a boring white wall on the Trans World Radio building at the circle by Sunset Beach is now a beautiful mural, featuring a panoply of tropical marine life. Offering a blend of Caribbean and Pacific marine wildlife, including blue tangs, anthias, a sea horse and a lion fish, a blue chromis, and a crab. The mural is dedicated to "The Glory of the Lord, and All His Works" (this written is from memory while sitting in a plane, so please excuse any misquotes), and any potential religious differences aside, the mural is an eye catching display of color and form.

However, not all Bonaire residents are happy about the mural. In an e-mail from Jess Renshaw, he says "you might call the painting a great advertisement for one of Bonaire's biggest competitors, Fiji". Certainly, if you take the mural to be an advertisement, he's probably right. On the other hand, it is an artistic rendering for non-commercial purposes and should be given some leeway as a result. The mural is certainly not the same thing as the patently commercial and offensive t-shirts one sees for sale here featuring tomato clownfish and their allied anemones, with the word "Bonaire" emblazoned across or below them.

We happened to run into Paul and Joellen Gallo, the artists behind (or actually, in front of) the mural, and spoke to them about the Carib-Pacific blend of fish portrayed. The appearance of full size yellow tangs swimming with blue tangs at the top of the mural came about as a request to liven the scene up with more color, while the lionfish started off as a scorpionfish but as those blend into the background, evolved into something more visible and notable. We should also mention that the Gallos, who are frequent Bonaire visitors, volunteered to paint the mural after it became clear that Wyland would not be using the wall to paint one of his famous Whaling Walls, and the whole effort has set them back about US$4,000 in expenses (they paid their own airfare to Bonaire as well), all of which they consider a gift on their part to Trans World Radio and the island of Bonaire.

Even upon departing Bonaire, the Gallos are ready to come back, and would like to offer Rincon a large mural of the native iguana, as well as work with local sign making businesses for a period of a month or two to train them to make murals a commercial success (which is one of the things they do in Hollywood, Florida, which they call home). The Gallos would also like to paint a large sea turtle mural for a willing customer (volunteerism doesn't put food on the table, alas). The Gallos can be reached at 001-954-983-7716, FAX 001-954-983-8730.

BonaireNet Drops Prices
In response to a rather sizable number of their customers migrating to the new BonaireLive! Internet service, BonaireNet (the original Internet Service Provider on Bonaire) is dropping its prices for a second time this summer.

BonaireNet, run by Hans and Ria van den Ende, has managed to work out a deal with its Internet supplier, IBM of Curacao, which allows them to offer, as of September 1st, access at a flat NAfl. 5,- per hour, with users only having to pay for what they use each much. According to Hans van den Ende, customers who have existing service contracts with BonaireNet will get a credit (in terms of hours) under the new system. Additional e-mail addresses are NAfl 5,- per month.

Also, BonaireNet is currently working to try and provide a flat-price, unlimited access service to the tune of NAfl 100,- month, possibly starting as soon as November 1st. BonaireNet's only competitor currently offers unlimited access for approximately NAfl 175,- (prices vary depending on volume arrangements).

BonaireNet's hourly rate plan is far better than what they were offering before and its greatest appeal would seem to currently apply to low-volume (less than 10-15 hours/month) users. However, it's unclear if the actual performance of IBM's connection will improve - in past months, the speed of IBM's Internet Connection from Bonaire (via BonaireNet) has been sluggish at best, which significantly skews the value of an hour of connect time.

Our own tests conducted in June showed that we generally got data and Web pages about 3-5x faster via BonaireLive than via BonaireNet - which makes one BonaireLive hour worth about 3-5 BonaireNet hours.

However, van den Ende assures us the IBM has recently upgraded its service, and that they are negotiating with a new access service in order to provide their customers with quality, high speed service in the coming months.

BonaireNet can be reach at 7160 or mailto:master@bonairenet.com
BonaireLive! can be reached at 5180 or
mailto:info@bonairelive.com

Quick Takes

- De Dijk - Come and Gone . The Mega City Summer Party, featuring the famous Dutch band De Dijk this past weekend, was quite a success, with 600 tickets sold, and people dancing, jumping, waving their arms and generally having a great time the whole time. With a good Aruban band opening for them, De Dijk played from just past midnight until after 2am, with party stalwarts hanging out until nearly dawn. While it's been explained to us (as non-Dutch speakers for the moment) that De Dijk's lyrics evoke wonderful imagery and wax poetic, we understood little of what was sung, but still managed to have a great time. Can't wait until the next Mega City party...

- Stormin' Sisters. Last week's big weather news were the storming sisters, Hurricanes Bonnie and Danielle. Bonnie drenched the southeastern and mid-Atlantic US before returning to sea and fizzling out while Danielle's off, doing her own thing away from land. However, Tropical Storm Earl has appeared in the Gulf of Mexico and appears to be heading north towards Texas. The storms, which have appeared in rapid succession lately, appear to have affected Bonaire's weather to some extent - last week the skies were overcast most of the time, and the on and off again heat wave was definitely on. No question about it - the normal September/October Bonaire doldrums, featuring little wind but great East Coast diving are upon us.

- 3rd International 'Bolas Criollas di Caribe' Tournament will held  Sept 4-6th at the Bopec Bolas Park. Contact mailto:tcb@bonairenet.com  for more information.

- Fishing Tournament. Open to Bonairean boats only, the 8th Annual Bonaire Fishing Tournament invites qualified and interested parties to register at the house of Dui Diaz (next to Richard's Restaurant in Playa Pariba). The tournament runs from just past midnight to 5pm on Sunday, Sept. 6th.

Bonaire E-News - This Week
August 24 - 30, 1998

This is Bonaire E-News(tm), a free weekly mailing, courtesy of InfoBonaire, of the latest and greatest news regarding what's happening on Bonaire. This issue covers August 24 - August 30, 1998. This week's Bonaire E-News articles are:

Storming Danielle & Bonnie!
The last week was a depressing one, at least as far as the weather in the Caribbean was concerned. The result was a series of tropical depressions which have rapidly turned into tropical storms. The first of these, Bonnie, is now a Hurricane, winging its way to the lower East Coast of the United States. In fact, a "Hurricane Watch" has been issued all the way from Savannah, Georgia to the North Carolina/Virginia border. Of course, that doesn't have much impact on Bonaire (other than a redirection of tourism to places known for being outside the so-called Hurricane Belt). Nor does (or did) Tropical Storm Charlie, which bullied the Texas and Louisiana coast lines over the weekend.

But then there's Danielle, a new Tropical Storm heading our way (kind of). At present, Danielle is about 1300 miles from Guadeloupe at 14.9 degrees north latitude, 40.7 degrees west longitude. At present, Danielle is heading west by northwest at 21 miles per hour and building in strength. If she continues that course, she'll miss Bonaire, but probably will still affect our weather patterns. (Today's conditions appear to be Bonnie's fault).

In any event these two sister storms appear to be marking the real, belated start of the Caribbean Hurricane season, and offer yet another reason to those of us on Bonaire to be thankful we live in an area where hurricanes are virtually non-existent.

For a great satellite image of both Bonnie and Danielle see http://www.pcwp.com/sat2.html . For the latest storm updates, visit http://www.storm98.com

Stinging Jellies
On Bonaire, we take the ocean for granted and assume that since we frolic in its waters on a regular basis that it's safe. Sadly, that's not always the case, as regular injuries caused by accidental or careless contact with marine organisms show. If it's not stepping on an urchin or scorpionfish, it's an inadvertent brush with fire coral, or, in the case of eight divers last week, with the long tentacles of a sea wasp (Carybdea alata) - a type of jellyfish. The eight divers had to hospitalized as a result of the encounter, one in serious condition. All this happened on Sunday, August 16th.

Bud Gillian, a frequent visitor to Bonaire with relatives here, is a science educator at Florida Atlantic University, and shared the following with us via e-mail: "Sea wasps (Carybdea alata) were spotted earlier in the week at Small Wall. The stings happened at several resorts in that area. Quick thinking by Jack Chalk, Dive Master at Habitat, getting the divers/snorkelers out of the water surely saved more people from sea wasp stings."

Jellyfish stings of any magnitude on Bonaire are actually not as uncommon as one might believe, ranging from seemingly inconsequential sea lice to Portuguese Man-O-Wars and sea wasps. In particular, sea wasps apparently tend to swarm 10-12 days after a full moon. However, it should be noted that really serious jellyfish stings are still a rarity, but still not as rare as they should be, namely because divers and snorkelers don't know they have to be a little cautious, even in Bonaire's relatively safe waters.

What this all boils down to is using common sense and powers of observation. Don't be like the snorkeler who, when the sea wasps were encountered, apparently jumped into the water wearing only a Speedo and mask to see these jellyfish.

8th Annual Local Fishing Tournament
(Courtesy of Port Call - Bonaire's Only English-Language Weekly) If you like to fish and win great prizes get yourself aboard a Bonaire registered boat next weekend and join the 8th annual Local Fishing tournament. Sign up at the house of Dui Diaz, located next to Richard’s Restaurant, in Playa Pariba. The tournament begins at 1 minute after midnight on Sunday, September 6th and ends at 5 p.m. that evening.

It is more than just a fishing contest. It’s an island cultural event. Last year 69 boats competed — power, sail and oar powered. Even more boats are expected to enter this year. T-shirts, drinks and a barbecue are included with each entry. There are 2 classes: Grandi, over 18 feet and the smaller, Chiki,” class. All boats should be equipped with lifejackets and required safety gear. Last year’s winner in the Grandi class was Franmar, owned by Rufo Thomas, with a combined weight of catch of 134 kg. Franmar also won the prize for the most fish caught - 38. The heaviest fish of the class, a shark, was caught by the boat Restistensia - 20 kg. The Chiki class was won by Alk, owned by E. Martis, with a combined catch of 61 kg. Alk also caught the heaviest fish of the tournament - 32 kg.

The prizes this year include Magellan GPSs, Standard VHF radios, compasses, fishing tackle and much more. Entry is free with the prizes provided by local sponsors. All are invited to a pre-tournament safety seminar at Dui’s house on Thursday, September 3rd at 7:30 p.m. presented by CITRO and the Antillean Coastguard.

Coming to a Reef Near You: Coral Spawning
We just returned from an interesting presentation by Dr. Aileen Morse from Texas A & M University regarding coral spawning, i.e. the release of eggs and sperm into the water column to generate coral larvae which then take hold and create new coral polyp colonies. Dr. Morse has been coming to Bonaire for years to study various aspects of corals here, most recently dealing with the spawning of the Acroporida species of corals (staghorn and elkhorn corals). While a number of these corals spawned a couple of weeks ago, Dr. Morse thinks it's still possible that additional corals in the same species will spawn shortly after the next full moon.

So, amateur and professional marine biology enthusiasts alike, take note: Staghorn and Elkhorn corals should spawn 1-2 days after the next full moon (which is on Sunday, September 6th), which the Montastrea species (small star coral) should spawn 5-6 days after the full moon. However, with waters being unusually warm, the dates for the star coral may shift to be a day or two earlier.

Spawning normally occurs for only about an hour or so, and usually starts between 8 and 10pm at night. Key indicators that spawning is going to be taking place can be seen in the affected corals upon close examination just after it gets dark out - the polyps will appear fuller in shape, and orange/yellow eggs will be peaking through the mouths of the polyps.

Anyone spotting a coral spawning in the coming weeks should report it to the Bonaire Marine Park at 8444 or marinepark@bonairenet.com , along with a description of the coral the spawning originated from. See you in the water on the nights of September 7th-12th!

Frater Candidus Passes Away
(Courtesy of Port Call) He made Bonaire a sweeter place for everyone. Last week, Brother Francis(Candidus), born Arnoldus Cornelis van der Linden in Oisterwijk, the Netherlands, a member of the congregation of the Brothers of Our Lady, Mother of Mercy since he was 19 years old, died in Oxnard, California. He was 79 years old.

Frater Candidus, as he is best known, was instrumental in the education of generations of Antilleans in Curaçao and Bonaire. During the 28 years he spent in Bonaire he also became an accomplished ornithologist.  His profound knowledge of bird life created international contacts essentially putting Bonaire high on the map of birdwatchers world wide. During their visits to Bonaire many amateurs and scientists learned from him.

His educational contributions in the Netherlands Antilles were recognized when the Queen of the Netherlands appointed him a Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau in 1975.  His achievements as an ornithologist were recognized in 1991 when he received the Silver Carnation from the Prince Bernhard Fund for Nature. He is credited with introducing the Trupial and other species of songbirds into Bonaire.

When the Congregation decided to close the Brother House in Bonaire in 1995 he volunteered to join the Brothers in California whom he had visited in 1973. Soon after his arrival he felt completely at home in the Oxnard religious community. He served as eucharistic minister in the St. John’s Regional Medical Center and in St. Anthony’s Parish.

He was a man who dedicated his life to God and the people he served. The mark he made on the people and nature of Bonaire is indelible. (Thanks to Lily-Ann Stewart of TCB for background.)

More Bonaire Clean-Up Information
Fundashon Tene Boneiru Limpi has announced that "Ban Hasi Boneiru Limpi, Kuminsa Ront Di Bo Kas" '98 will in fact be held on September 19th and 20th.  The island action is part of the international "Clean Up The World" campaign and the International Coastal Cleanup.

Clean Up the World started first as a national event in Australia in 1990 by Ian Kiernan, an Australian house-builder and sailor.  As he sailed by himself around the world in 1986-87, he saw oceans clogged with garbage.

When he got home, he started the Clean Up Australia effort. It became an international event in 1993 and Bonaire joined the effort in 1994.

This is the fifth year for Bonaire's participation in the international "Clean Up the World" event.  In previous years, more than 25% of the population of Bonaire joined the action along with millions of people in 110 countries around the world.

Last year more that 3500 large bags were filled with sushi. For every bag of trash you fill, you will receive a free lottery ticket. Each afternoon of the clean-up, from 3 to 6 p.m., people can turn in their tickets. The prizes are five mountain bikes.

Tene Boneiru Limpi requests all companies and organizations to register for the clean-up activity.  Anyone interested in joining the effort should call Elsmarie Beukenboom at 8322 or mailto:elsmarie@bonairenet.com  or call Lieske Keukens at 5584 or mailto:et@bonairelive.net .

There will also be an organized beach and underwater cleanup in conjunction with the International Coastal Cleanup.  CURO and the Sea Turtle Club of Bonaire coordinate this effort.  This effort includes cataloging the trash picked up for reporting to the Center for Marine Conservation in Washington, DC.  Those interested in helping with the coastal and underwater effort should contact Corine Gerharts at 8399 or mailto:corine@bonairelive.net  for beach cleanup and Marion Wilson of CURO at 7500 for under water cleaning. Alternatively, people can contact any dive operator.

Fundashon Tene Boneiru Limpi asks that you please let them know how many people will join your group and which area your group would prefer to clean, and on which date(s) (September 19th and/or 20th).

Individuals who aren't part of a group can come to one of two public cleanup locations.  The first is on Kaya Korona across from Eastern Store and the second is at the Rose Inn in Rincon.

Due to limited finances, Fundashon Tene Boneiru Limpi will have to charge for the new T-shirts with our logo. They are available in various colors in uni size. Each group leader can buy a T-shirt at cost for Naf. 7,50, while additional T-shirts will cost Naf. 15,00.

The rallying cry is "Keep Bonaire Clean!", and the organization is Tene Boneiru Limpi. The official Bonaire clean-up community event kicks off Friday September 18th with school children scouring the fields and area around their schools and continues throughout the weekend with a variety of projects, including island clean-up, coastal clean-up, and underwater clean-up.

All companies and groups of people are being asked to donate their time to come out and lend a hand. As a small reward for the hard working volunteers, a lottery will be held after the event. Each full bag (rated for 100 pounds of trash) turned in will be exchanged for one lottery ticket. The lottery tickets offer volunteers a chance at one of five (5) excellent off-road bikes.

As more information becomes available we'll post it in the Bonaire E-News.

AKIB General Meeting August 20

AKIB is the Asosashon di Komersio i Industria Boneriano (also known as the Bonaire Business and Industry Association). The purpose of this meeting will be to review the recent activities of the AKIB Board of Directors, solicit business community input on issues that AKIB should help with, and a look toward the future of Bonaire's business community. All interested businesses are welcome to attend. If, after attending, you find AKIB to be everything it promises to be, you can apply for membership on the spot - cost is NAfl. 120.- For further information, contact Ruth van Tilburg at 5742.

Bonaire E-News - This Week
August 10 - 16, 1998

This is Bonaire E-News(tm), a free weekly mailing, courtesy of InfoBonaire, of the latest and greatest news regarding what's happening on Bonaire. This issue covers August 10 - August 16, 1998. This week's Bonaire E-News articles are

Sugaro is Coming Back to Bonaire!

Sugaro, a great band from the New York area, is coming back to Bonaire for three concerts. Featuring the vocals of the talented Catherine Russell, Gary Gold on percussion (and the mike), Aaron Heick on Sax, and Tom Barney on Bass, Sugaro blends the soul music of the sixties and seventies with a contemporary sound.

The dates Sugaro will perform are
Friday, Aug. 21 - "Way too good music..." @ Habitat, 9pm-2am, Tickets Nafl 10
Sunday, Aug. 23 - Pool Party & BBQ @ Habitat, 530pm-?, Nafl. 10 for show
Friday, Aug. 28 - Jam Session & Fundraiser @ Habitat, 8pm-?, Nafl 10.-

For more information on the band, check out their Web site at http://www.sugaro.com

De Dijk Party

In the spirit of the fun Mega City party a few months ago, City Cafe is throwing a party featuring De Dijk, a famous Dutch musical group which plays a blend of pop, rock and roll, and Dutch soul. The event will be held on Saturday, August 29th, on Kaya Amsterdam, and will start at around 9pm, with the band starting around midnight. Tickets are Nafl 25.- and are running out quickly (they may have already run out by the time you read this). Call City Cafe at 8286 for details.

CITRO Needs Your Help

CITRO, the Citizens Rescue Organization offers free help to mariners, divers, and anyone using the wates of Bonaire in the event of life threatening emergencies, usually via the use of the CITRO boat, the Zeeleeuw ("Sea Lion").

CITRO is entirely a volunteer effort, and the Zeeleeuw is manned by many of these volunteers, who risk their lives (and sacrifice their precious time) to help save the lives of others. Since CITRO is not funded by the government, it needs the support of Bonaire's residents, businesses, and visitors to continue its valuable efforts.

During 1997, CITRO Bonaire received 33 alarm calls from the Coast Guard, local police or others. The one rescue boat was active for 114 hours, 34 of which were operational and the remaining 80 used for training.

If you can afford a monetary donation of any size, a donation of equipment or servives, and/or are able to offer your time as a volunteer, please contact Jan van der Werf at 5038.

Bonaire Twin Cinema News & Features - August 13-19, 1998

We unfortunately were unable to obtain any movie listing information from the Bonaire Twin Cinema for the upcoming week, apparently because they haven't received their schedule from their headquarters. Hopefully this will be rectified shortly. In the meantime, call 2400 to get an update on what movies will be playing as of August 13th.

Quick Takes

SGB Remains Closed
You may have noticed a dearth of activity in the vicinity of the SGB (the local high school) this week, even though the school was supposed to have opened for classes on Monday, August 10th. It turns out that some organizational issues have delayed the opening of the school for at least another week. The school is currently slated to open on Monday, August 17th.

75km Bike Race
Discover Bonaire is sponsoring and organizing a 75km Road Bike Race on Sunday, August 16th. Contact Andre Nahr at Discover Bonaire at mailto:discover@bonairenet.com or 5433 for details.

New Menu at The Dome

Thanks to the Dome's new manager, Isabelle Hamel, you now have a chance to try more than just their yummy burgers and munchies. The Dome recently changed its dinner menu to include several different appetizers, including a tasty Teriyaki Chicken Salad, The Dome Salad (battered fried fish with a sesame seed oil dressing), and Beef Carpaccio. For a main course, you can now enjoy The Dome's Stir Fry, Caribbean Scallops, and a Tenderloin, among other things. The Dome will still continue to offer one or more nightly specials, and for those that crave a burger, the old menu can still be ordered from as well. The Dome is located across from Maduro & Curiel's Bank in downtown Kralendijk (just in case, for some strange reason, you haven't noticed it before). Phone 8003.

Beware the Five Guilder Coin

On a recent shopping trip to Curacao, were greatly surprised by the new five guilder coin, which is slightly larger and thicker than the one guilder coin but not by much. At first glance, we thought we had been given the wrong change, but comparing the five and one guilder coins side by side, you can see the slight difference. One local merchant on Bonaire says he started seeing them about a month ago. His complaint was a lack of storage space in his cash register for another coin. The emergence of the five guilder coin is part of a plan by the central government to phase out the paper five guilder note as part of a cost cutting measure, since coins last longer than paper notes. We're all for the government spending less, we just wish they had made the new coin a lot less like the one guilder coin...

Spectacular special effects combined with a touching story of how mankind faces the end of world make this a true disaster epic of the 90s. The movie's theme says it all "Oceans rise. Cities fall. ---------------------------------

"SCREAM 2"
    - Nightly at 9:15PM  Last Week !!!

If you thought SCREAM was scary, you're advised to NOT go to SCREAM 2. It seems Wes Craven and the original cast have developed a perverse magnetism to blood and gruesome killings. This time they have gone too far... SCREAM is simple too terrifying for people of normal sensitivity. This picture so revolted the Academy of Motion Pictures (the folks who hand out Oscars) that the film received absolutely no nominations. Bonaire Twin Cinema cannot be held responsible for the horrifying experience people who ignore these warnings will subject to. Starring Courtney Cox, Jerry O'Connell, Neve Campbell, Liev Schreiber, and David Arquette (Rated R, Horror, 122 minutes).
