Bonaire E-News - This Week But then there's Danielle, a new Tropical Storm heading our way (kind of). At present,
Danielle is about 1300 miles from Guadeloupe at 14.9 degrees north latitude, 40.7 degrees west longitude. At present, Danielle is heading west by northwest at 21 miles
per hour and building in strength. If she continues that course, she'll miss Bonaire, but probably will still affect our weather patterns. (Today's conditions appear to be Bonnie's fault).
In any event these two sister storms appear to be marking the real, belated start of the Caribbean Hurricane season, and offer yet another reason to those of us on Bonaire to
be thankful we live in an area where hurricanes are virtually non-existent. For a great satellite image of both Bonnie and Danielle see Bud Gillian, a frequent visitor to Bonaire with relatives here, is a science educator at
Florida Atlantic University, and shared the following with us via e-mail: "Sea wasps (Carybdea alata) were spotted earlier in the week at Small Wall. The stings happened
at several resorts in that area. Quick thinking by Jack Chalk, Dive Master at Habitat, getting the divers/snorkelers out of the water surely saved more people from sea wasp stings."
Jellyfish stings of any magnitude on Bonaire are actually not as uncommon as one might believe, ranging from seemingly inconsequential sea lice to Portuguese
Man-O-Wars and sea wasps. In particular, sea wasps apparently tend to swarm 10-12 days after a full moon. However, it should be noted that really serious jellyfish
stings are still a rarity, but still not as rare as they should be, namely because divers and snorkelers don't know they have to be a little cautious, even in Bonaire's relatively safe waters.
What this all boils down to is using common sense and powers of observation. Don't be like the snorkeler who, when the sea wasps were encountered, apparently jumped
into the water wearing only a Speedo and mask to see these jellyfish. It is more than just a fishing contest. It’s an island cultural event. Last year 69 boats
competed — power, sail and oar powered. Even more boats are expected to enter this year. T-shirts, drinks and a barbecue are included with each entry. There are 2
classes: Grandi, over 18 feet and the smaller, Chiki,” class. All boats should be equipped with lifejackets and required safety gear. Last year’s winner in the Grandi
class was Franmar, owned by Rufo Thomas, with a combined weight of catch of 134 kg. Franmar also won the prize for the most fish caught - 38. The heaviest fish of the
class, a shark, was caught by the boat Restistensia - 20 kg. The Chiki class was won by Alk, owned by E. Martis, with a combined catch of 61 kg. Alk also caught the heaviest fish of the tournament - 32 kg.
The prizes this year include Magellan GPSs, Standard VHF radios, compasses, fishing tackle and much more. Entry is free with the prizes provided by local sponsors. All are
invited to a pre-tournament safety seminar at Dui’s house on Thursday, September 3rd at 7:30 p.m. presented by CITRO and the Antillean Coastguard.
So, amateur and professional marine biology enthusiasts alike, take note: Staghorn and Elkhorn corals should spawn 1-2 days after the next full moon (which is on Sunday,
September 6th), which the Montastrea species (small star coral) should spawn 5-6 days after the full moon. However, with waters being unusually warm, the dates for the star coral may shift to be a day or two earlier.
Spawning normally occurs for only about an hour or so, and usually starts between 8 and 10pm at night. Key indicators that spawning is going to be taking place can be
seen in the affected corals upon close examination just after it gets dark out - the polyps will appear fuller in shape, and orange/yellow eggs will be peaking through the mouths of the polyps.
Anyone spotting a coral spawning in the coming weeks should report it to the Bonaire Marine Park at 8444 or Frater Candidus, as he is best known, was instrumental in the education of generations
of Antilleans in Curaçao and Bonaire. During the 28 years he spent in Bonaire he also became an accomplished ornithologist. His profound knowledge of bird life created
international contacts essentially putting Bonaire high on the map of birdwatchers world wide. During their visits to Bonaire many amateurs and scientists learned from him.
His educational contributions in the Netherlands Antilles were recognized when the Queen of the Netherlands appointed him a Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau in
1975. His achievements as an ornithologist were recognized in 1991 when he received the Silver Carnation from the Prince Bernhard Fund for Nature. He is
credited with introducing the Trupial and other species of songbirds into Bonaire. When the Congregation decided to close the Brother House in Bonaire in 1995 he
volunteered to join the Brothers in California whom he had visited in 1973. Soon after his arrival he felt completely at home in the Oxnard religious community. He served as
eucharistic minister in the St. John’s Regional Medical Center and in St. Anthony’s Parish. He was a man who dedicated his life to God and the people he served. The mark he
made on the people and nature of Bonaire is indelible. (Thanks to Lily-Ann Stewart of TCB for background.) Clean Up the World started first as a national event in Australia in 1990 by Ian
Kiernan, an Australian house-builder and sailor. As he sailed by himself around the world in 1986-87, he saw oceans clogged with garbage. When he got home, he started the Clean Up Australia effort. It became an
international event in 1993 and Bonaire joined the effort in 1994. This is the fifth year for Bonaire's participation in the international "Clean Up the
World" event. In previous years, more than 25% of the population of Bonaire joined the action along with millions of people in 110 countries around the world.
Last year more that 3500 large bags were filled with sushi. For every bag of trash you fill, you will receive a free lottery ticket. Each afternoon of the clean-up, from 3 to 6
p.m., people can turn in their tickets. The prizes are five mountain bikes. Tene Boneiru Limpi requests all companies and organizations to register for the
clean-up activity. Anyone interested in joining the effort should call Elsmarie Beukenboom at 8322 or There will also be an organized beach and underwater cleanup in conjunction with the
International Coastal Cleanup. CURO and the Sea Turtle Club of Bonaire coordinate this effort. This effort includes cataloging the trash picked up for reporting to the
Center for Marine Conservation in Washington, DC. Those interested in helping with the coastal and underwater effort should contact Corine Gerharts at 8399 or Fundashon Tene Boneiru Limpi asks that you please let them know how many people
will join your group and which area your group would prefer to clean, and on which date(s) (September 19th and/or 20th). Individuals who aren't part of a group can come to one of two public cleanup
locations. The first is on Kaya Korona across from Eastern Store and the second is at the Rose Inn in Rincon. Due to limited finances, Fundashon Tene Boneiru Limpi will have to charge for the
new T-shirts with our logo. They are available in various colors in uni size. Each group leader can buy a T-shirt at cost for Naf. 7,50, while additional T-shirts will cost Naf. 15,00.
Blending action with a touch of romance and comedy, The Big Hit follows the misadventures of a beleaguered hitman, Mel, who takes a moonlighting gig that turns
sour. What seems like a quick and easy kidnapping backfires when the victim turns out to be the godchild of the boss. (Rated R, Action Drama, 91 minutes). See
Wild Things, set in the wilds of the Florida Everglades, features a spicy tale, full of surprising twists, lust, murder, and revenge. Stars Matt Dillon, Kevin Bacon, Neve
Campbell (Scream 1 and 2) and the delectable Denise Richards (Starship Troopers) (Rated R Thriller, 106 minutes). See A contemporary take on a classic tale, Eddie Murphy stars as Dr. Dolittle, veterinarian that discovers one that that he can actually speak with his patients. Dr. Dolittle
promises to be a fun family film. (Rated PG-13, comedy, 85 minutes) (This movie is also this month's featured Kids Free Movie Club movie. For movie details see: Also, check out the Dinner and a Movie special offered by Bonaire Twin Cinema and De Tuin Restaurant.

The purpose of this meeting will be to review the recent activities of the AKIB Board of Directors, solicit business community input on issues that AKIB should help with, and a look toward the future of Bonaire's business community. Bonaire E-News - This Week
Sugaro is Coming Back to Bonaire! Sugaro, a great band from the New York area, is coming back to Bonaire for three concerts. Featuring the vocals of the talented Catherine Russell, Gary Gold on percussion (and the mike), Aaron Heick on Sax, and Tom Barney on Bass, Sugaro blends the soul music of the sixties and seventies with a contemporary sound. The dates Sugaro will perform are For more information on the band, check out their Web site at http://www.sugaro.com De Dijk Party In the spirit of the fun Mega City party a few months ago, City Cafe is throwing a party featuring De Dijk, a famous Dutch musical group which plays a blend of pop, rock and roll, and Dutch soul. The event will be held on Saturday, August 29th, on Kaya Amsterdam, and will start at around 9pm, with the band starting around midnight. Tickets are Nafl 25.- and are running out quickly (they may have already run out by the time you read this). Call City Cafe at 8286 for details. CITRO Needs Your Help CITRO, the Citizens Rescue Organization offers free help to mariners, divers, and anyone using the wates of Bonaire in the event of life threatening emergencies, usually via the use of the CITRO boat, the Zeeleeuw ("Sea Lion"). CITRO is entirely a volunteer effort, and the Zeeleeuw is manned by many of these volunteers, who risk their lives (and sacrifice their precious time) to help save the lives of others. Since CITRO is not funded by the government, it needs the support of Bonaire's residents, businesses, and visitors to continue its valuable efforts. During 1997, CITRO Bonaire received 33 alarm calls from the Coast Guard, local police or others. The one rescue boat was active for 114 hours, 34 of which were operational and the remaining 80 used for training. If you can afford a monetary donation of any size, a donation of equipment or servives, and/or are able to offer your time as a volunteer, please contact Jan van der Werf at 5038. Bonaire Twin Cinema News & Features - August 13-19, 1998 We unfortunately were unable to obtain any movie listing information from the Bonaire Twin Cinema for the upcoming week, apparently because they haven't received their schedule from their headquarters. Hopefully this will be rectified shortly. In the meantime, call 2400 to get an update on what movies will be playing as of August 13th. Quick Takes SGB Remains Closed 75km Bike Race |

Bonaire E-News - This Week This week's Bonaire E-News articles are:
New Menu at The Dome Thanks to the Dome's new manager, Isabelle Hamel, you now have a chance to try more than just their yummy burgers and munchies. The Dome recently changed its dinner menu to include several different appetizers, including a tasty Teriyaki Chicken Salad, The Dome Salad (battered fried fish with a sesame seed oil dressing), and Beef Carpaccio. For a main course, you can now enjoy The Dome's Stir Fry, Caribbean Scallops, and a Tenderloin, among other things. The Dome will still continue to offer one or more nightly specials, and for those that crave a burger, the old menu can still be ordered from as well. The Dome is located across from Maduro & Curiel's Bank in downtown Kralendijk (just in case, for some strange reason, you haven't noticed it before). Phone 8003. Beware the Five Guilder Coin On a recent shopping trip to Curacao, were greatly surprised by the new five guilder coin, which is slightly larger and thicker than the one guilder coin but not by much. At first glance, we thought we had been given the wrong change, but comparing the five and one guilder coins side by side, you can see the slight difference. One local merchant on Bonaire says he started seeing them about a month ago. His complaint was a lack of storage space in his cash register for another coin. The emergence of the five guilder coin is part of a plan by the central government to phase out the paper five guilder note as part of a cost cutting measure, since coins last longer than paper notes. We're all for the government spending less, we just wish they had made the new coin a lot less like the one guilder coin... Bonaire Twin Cinema News & Features - August 6-12, 1998
Starting Thursday, August 6, Bonaire Twin Cinema will be offering the following film features (NaFl. 10.- for all normal features) "Wild Things" Wild Things, set in the wilds of the Florida Everglades, features a spicy tale, full of
surprising twists, lust, murder, and revenge. Stars Matt Dillon, Kevin Bacon, Neve Campbell (Scream 1 and 2) and the delectable Denise Richards (Starship Troopers) (Rated R Thriller, 106 minutes). "Deep Impact"
Deep Impact is the story of the world's reaction to a death sentence imposed by rocks, two gigantic hunks of rock hurtling at the Earth from outer space, to be exact.
Spectacular special effects combined with a touching story of how mankind faces the end of world make this a true disaster epic of the 90s. The movie's theme says it
all "Oceans rise. Cities fall. Hope Survives." Starring Robert Duvall, Tia Leone, Morgan Freeman, Vanessa Redgrave, and Maximilliam Schell. (Rated PG-13, Action Thriller, CinemaScope, 123 minutes). See http://www.deep-impact.com for more details. "Paulie A Parrot's Tale" Marie, a little girl with a bad stutter, manages to overcome her speech impediment
thanks to a parrot named Paulie, because the colorful bird is able to converse with people, and not just mimic as other normal parrots do. After Marie's parents send
Paulie away, the birds begins a long cross country search to find his friend Marie, and has many interesting and entertaining encounters along the way. It's a movie for
the whole family. Starring Cheech Marin and Hallie Kate Eisenberg. (Rated PG, Fantasy, 87 minutes) See http://www.freezone.com/paulie/story.html for more details. "SCREAM 2" If you thought SCREAM was scary, you're advised to NOT go to SCREAM 2. It
seems Wes Craven and the original cast have developed a perverse magnetism to blood and gruesome killings. This time they have gone too far... SCREAM is simple
too terrifying for people of normal sensitivity. This picture so revolted the Academy of Motion Pictures (the folks who hand out Oscars) that the film received absolutely
no nominations. Bonaire Twin Cinema cannot be held responsible for the horrifying experience people who ignore these warnings will subject to. Starring Courtney
Cox, Jerry O'Connell, Neve Campbell, Liev Schreiber, and David Arquette (Rated R, Horror, 122 minutes). Coming Soon at Bonaire Twin Cinemas "The Magic Sword", "Good Will Hunting", "The Big Hit", and "Dr. Doolittle". Dinner and a Movie - One price for all evening! Includes A special movie dinner in De Tuin Eetcafe till 10pm with coffee and a free soft drink or an Amstel. After the movie, enjoy another free Amstel. Tickets can be purchased in De Tuin Eetcafe and Bonaire Twin Cinema. The Bonaire Twin Cinema Box Office opens nightly at 430PM, and no reservations are required. Tickets are only available at the box office. Questions about the movies?
