Bonaire E-News - This Week
July 27 - August 2, 1998

This part of the InfoBonaire Web site features the contents of our special Bonaire E-NewsTM weekly e-mail news broadcast. To be added to our Bonaire E-News mailing list, please send a message to add-news@InfoBonaire.com.

This week's Bonaire E-News articles are:

On Bonaire Time

Most of you are no doubt familiar with the concept of "Bonaire Time", where things kind of happen at their own pace, and this usually means well after they were supposed to be accomplished. Bonaire Time applies to meetings, service calls, and many other things. This week, it also applies to the Bonaire E-News, as witnessed by the fact that this issue covers the Week of July 27th, and it is presently July 29th. We could try to pass the blame on to the fact that we have just finished upgrading our computer hardware, and that it took much longer than expected. But it's tough to blame machines for our own lack of proper planning.

The good news is that you haven't missed much in the way of news, and in fact, our delay lets us give you the latest peek at a possible hurricane developing in the Atlantic Ocean (see "Hurricane?" below).

Next week, the Bonaire E-News will be back on schedule. Hopefully.

Department of Corrections

In the last two issues we've referred to the new restaurant Shamballas as "Chamballas". Oops. Fortunately no one at Shamballas (or elsewhere) seems to have been upset by this.

We should mention that we have had the chance to dine at Shamballas in the last couple of days, and found their Caribbean main courses to be excellent (we had the Cuban Chicken and Bahamian Fish). And their sangria is quite tasty too. We hope to try their sushi (raw fish with rice) soon. And another week or so should have all the wrinkles in their organization and orchestration ironed out. Phone: 8286.

Hurricane?

What started a few days ago as Tropical Depression 1 (only a scientist would come up with that name) is now Tropical Storm Alex. The Tropical Depression started just below the Cape Verde islands, and has been moving west towards the Caribbean at about 20-25 miles per hour. As of this morning it was upgraded to a Tropical Storm, and given a name because its winds are now over 40 miles per hour and climbing.

The good news for us on Bonaire is that Tropical Storm Alex (soon to be Hurricane Alex if the winds keep picking up) should be passing Bonaire by entirely. In fact, Alex should may miss most of the populated Caribbean islands if it continues along its course towards the United States' southeast coast. However, as Alex is still some 1400 miles from Puerto Rico, it's too soon to tell if the storm will continue west by northwest or change course due west again. As users of the Internet, however, you can track Alex's progress via a map at http://www.pcwp.com/current.html

Per the U.S. National Hurricane Center, the Atlantic-Caribbean Hurricane season began June 1 and ends Nov. 30. Alex is the first tropical storm of the season.

Local Activities in a Nutshell

Courtesy of Bonaire Update, the handy twice-a-month calendar of events available at most restaurants, here are the special events and activities for the coming week:

  • Friday, July 31st - Karel's Beach Bar features Olvin Bard - the one man show
  • Sunday, Aug. 2nd - 5km Run - starts at Bo Toko in Noord Salina, 7:30AM!
  • Sunday, Aug. 2nd - Mi Poron Restaurant features a BBQ and Mariachi Music

Poland & Bonaire

What do Poland and Bonaire have in common? At first glance, not a heck of a lot. Poland is certainly not known for its diving, and while Bonaire isn't exactly the agricultural capital of the Dutch Caribbean or popular for its sausages. However, the Polish National Tourist Office seems to like the work done by Adams Unlimited, a public relations firm which acts as Bonaire's tourism agent in the United States.

"With Adams Unlimited's vast experience in the tourism sector, including destination marketing, combined with their success in launching high impact campaigns for hotels, resorts, and airlines, the Polish National Tourist Office is confident that they are the best firm to showcase our product," said Leszek Mokrzycki, Director, Polish National Tourist Office.

We hope that Poland benefits from the relationship. Adams Unlimited has certainly helped increase awareness of Bonaire in the U.S., at least among divers, but awareness isn't the same as a live, money-spending tourist on a plane to Bonaire - which is what our island really needs to see a lot more of (tourists and planes).

In case you are wondering about Adams' other clients, they are: Divi Aruba Beach Resort, Tamarijn Aruba Beach Resort, COUPLES Resorts in Jamaica, Swept Away Resort in Jamaica, Interklub Moskau (Club Royale) in Moscow and the Taleon Club in St. Petersburg, Russia. Past clients have included Jolly Hotels of Italy, IATAN, The Pan Am Shuttle and Air Europe.

Speed Bump Confessions

Some of you may have noticed that that some safety minded officials have tried to help people understand what a "stop" sign means on Bonaire via the addition of two sets of triple speed bumps on Kaya Industria, on either side of the road where it intersects with the road from the airport. Sadly, in the several times we've driven in that area, we've seen people swerve into oncoming traffic or onto the dirt shoulders to avoid said speed bumps, which actually makes them more of a safety hazard than the folks who don't know how to apply a stop sign to real driving.

However, there is a solution, according to physics classes we took in the previous decade. It turns out that springs, such as those in a vehicle's suspension, can compress and expand in such a way as to minimize the shock felt by the device to which the springs are attached (the car or truck), if the force against the spring occurs rapidly enough. With a single speed bump, the ideal velocity at which to speed over the bump to avoid feeling it in the vehicle, across a wide range of different suspensions, is about 90 miles (144 kilometers) per hour. Theoretically, if you increase this speed, it should prove to wipe out the nasty shock of the first-ever Bonairean triple speed bumps. The only flaws to applying this theory are:

  1. Most vehicles on Bonaire can't go that fast.
  2. Even if they could, the local police would frown on such excessive speeds.
  3. You only have about 20 feet (6 meters) between the end of the speed bumps and the stop sign at the intersection with a busy road.

Stay tuned to future issues of Bonaire E-New for more fun (and probably useless) scientific facts!

Bonaire Twin Cinema is located in the heart of Kralendijk next to the Exito Bakery and behind the Cultimara Supermarket. Starting Thursday, July 30, Bonaire Twin Cinema will be offering the following film features (NaFl. 10.- for all normal features):

    - Late Shows: Fri. & Sat. at 11:30PM

Deep Impact is the story of the world's reaction to a death sentence imposed by rocks, two gigantic hunks of rock hurtling at the Earth from outer space, to be exact. Spectacular special effects combined with a touching story of how mankind faces the end of world make this a true disaster epic of the 90s. The movie's theme says it all: "Oceans rise. Cities fall. Hope Survives." Starring Robert Duvall, Tia Leone, Morgan Freeman, Vanessa Redgrave, and Maximilliam Schell. (Rated PG-13, Action Thriller, CinemaScope, 123 minutes). See http://www.deep-impact.com for more details.

    - Matinees: Sat. & Sun. at 1:00PM, 3:00PM, and 5:00PM

Marie, a little girl with a bad stutter, manages to overcome her speech impediment thanks to a parrot named Paulie, because the colorful bird is able to converse with people, and not just mimic as other normal parrots do. - Nightly at 10:00PM
    - Late Shows Fri. & Sat. at 12:30AM

If you thought SCREAM was scary, you're advised to NOT go to SCREAM 2. It seems Wes Craven and the original cast have developed a perverse magnetism to blood and gruesome killings. This time they have gone too far... SCREAM is simple too terrifying for people of normal sensitivity. This picture so revolted the Academy of Motion Pictures (the folks who hand out Oscars) that the film received absolutely no nominations. Bonaire Twin Cinema cannot be held responsible for the horrifying experience people who ignore these warnings will subject to. Starring Courtney Cox, Jerry O'Connell, Neve Campbell, Liev Schreiber, and David Arquette (Rated R, Horror, 122 minutes). See http://www.dimensionfilms.com:8889/ows-doc/scream2/ for details

Scuba Instructor Training Course (reminder)

The next PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) & IOC training courses will be held August 8-17 in Aruba. Bonaire's Pam Teitel of Professional Motivations Training Institute will be giving the course (and as one of us at NetTech has taken the IDC with Pam in the last year, we can attest to how excellent and thorough an instructor she is). The IE (Instructor Examination) for certifications is August 18-19. Anybody interested in becoming a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor can contact Pam at 5061 or check out her website at http://www.infobonaire/pmti/

The competition will run for as long as there are entrants. Each entry will be voted on by the De Tuin staff and customers, with the ultimate winner earning fame and respect, and some type of prize (still being determined). So, if you're willing to pit your culinary skills against Joep, the most recent winner of this contest, contact Helmi of De Tuin at 2999 after 5pm daily for details on entering the contest, but do so quickly! - she needs to have the contestants lined up and scheduled by the end of the week.

Chamballas Opening Tonight

In last week's Bonaire E-News, we reported that the new Restaurant Chamballas, located next to City Cafe, would be open as of July 17th. It turns out that preparations took slightly longer than expected (not unusual on Bonaire, of course), and the restaurant is now slated to open tonight, Monday July 20th, instead. Also, to further clarify, the menu will focus on Caribbean-style food, as well as offer international dishes, in addition to the sushi and tapas mentioned last week. Call ahead to confirm they are open at 8286

And, Yet Another New Restaurant!

It's news enough when one new restaurant opens, but this past weekend, yet another elegant restaurant opened in Kralendijk. For weeks, people heading up Kaya Grandi had been teased with a sheet draped over a sign for the Restaurant Bali. Well, on Saturday, July 18th, Restaurant Bali officially opened its doors. Located where the Le Jardin Tropical used to be, above Boolchands, the restaurant offers a diverse menu of Indonesian specialties.

Restaurant Bali was started by the former rijst tafel (rice table) chef of the Old Inn Restaurant and some other partners, so we can trust the food to be tasty and plentiful. The restaurant is currently open Tuesday through Sunday for dinner, from 630pm to 1000pm, and offers a menu ranging from individual entrees priced at an average Nafl. 23,00 to several rijst tafels from Nafl. 37,50 to the sumptious Rijst Tafel "Bali" offering 30 different items for Nafl. 65,00. For the uninformed, a rijst tafel is a feast fit for a king, offering generous samples of a wide variety of different Indonesian specialities, and needs to be tried to be believed. Make sure you haven't eaten for at least a couple of meals however, as rijst tafels can be rather filling. Restaurant Bali accepts MasterCard and Visa, and will be accepting American Express at the end of the week. Phone 4779.

New Market with Great Vegetables and Fruits Opens

Last Thursday, Franklin & Lucy Westmass Soogea opened the Tropische Winkel Klein Suriname, a small fresh produce market specializing in goods from Suriname. We had the pleasure of visiting their store and were overwhelmed with the variety of vegetables and fruits. We haven't seen as much edible greenery in one place on Bonaire since we've been here. Fruits included huge limes and pampelmousse (a type of grapefruit) and passion fruit, with vegetables ranged from several varieties of string beans to many leafy vegetables we had never seen before. However, that wasn't intimidating because Lucy gave us a grand tour and for each type of item explained how it could be cooked and prepared for the best flavor. The market also offers freshly frozen fish and freshwater shrimp, along with a variety of marinades. Oh, and we should mention that all produce is flown in twice weekly from Suriname (currently on Mondays and Thursdays), and that the produce is all organically grown - no pesticides or chemicals are used.

The market is located on the corner of the Lourdes Shopping Mall, between L'Applique and Mundo Musical. Phone/FAX 7970. Hours 830AM-100PM, 3PM-7PM, Monday through Saturday.

In a web of dangerous characters, Jackie Brown should be wondering how to stay alive, but all she is thinking about is how she can make off with the money. The Beauty of Bonaire - Islandcolours

Last Friday night, there was a special preview of the new book, Islandcolours, featuring the brilliant photographic contributions of Bonaire's own Suzi Swygert, Dos & Bertie Winkel, and Jerry Schnabel. The book is now available for sale at Photo Tours (Kaya Gob. N. Debrot 32) for US$60 (only US$50 if you mention you saw this article in the Bonaire E-News). If you want to see a whole new side of Bonaire (the top side, to be exact), documented with breathtaking pictures and insightful text, Islandcolours is for you. (We've already picked up several copies of the book as presents for friends overseas because we think it will offer them wonderful insight into the beauty of Bonaire and entice them to visit us.) Photo Tours, which is currently holding an exhibition featuring photography from the Islandcolours book, can be reached by phone at 5390, FAX 8060, or e-mail JerrySchna@aol.com.

July 13 - July 19, 1998
For the week of July 13 - 19, 1998, our news items are:

New Restaurant Opening Friday

Have you been wondering what's been going on next to City Cafe? It's a new restaurant called Chamballas, and it's opening this Friday, July 17th.Chamballas will feature international cuisine and BBQ food, but the most exciting thing (in our opinion) is that at the bar they will be offering Spanish-style Tapas (appetizer-sized portions of diverse food - order several to make a meal out of it) and Japanese-style Sushi (not to be confused with Bonairean-style "Sushi" ("Sushi" means "Garbage" in Papiamentu)).

The restaurant will be open daily for lunch from Noon to 3PM, and for dinner from 6PM to 11PM. It is our understanding that there will be opening day specials available. Call Chamballas at 8286 for details.

Presentation "Reefs of Bonaire"

George Buckley, a well-known researcher and lecturer on topics of marine biology, will be presenting a free slide show entitled "Reefs of Bonaire" tonight (Monday, July 13th) at Captain Don's Habitat.

The presentation will provide an overview of Bonaire's marine ecosystem as well as discuss Bonaire's participation in last year's United Nations Year of the Reef program. The presentation starts at 845PM.

Government Clamps Down on Permits

Recent reports in the Port Call and Extra newpapers have indicated that the Bonairean government is trying to seriously address the issue of rising unemployment on the island. The first major announcement by Lt. Governor R.N. Hart in support of this effort was that no more new work permits would be granted to foreign workers. This started as an issue with construction workers, but has expanded to include all employment. However, it is our understanding that the Lt. Governor may be petitioned in case of specialcircumstances. No word on how long this moratorium will be in effect.

The second announcement, published in three languages (Dutch, Papiamentu, and English) in last Thursday's Extra newspaper, indicates that the Lt.Governor is granting amnesty for the remainder of July to all foreignnationals living permanently and/or working on Bonaire who are not in possession of valid working and/or residence permits. Such persons must report to the labor office of the island government by the end of July, and have until the end of August to find legal work in order to obtain valid work and residence permits. This also applies to individuals who may have valid work permits but are performing work outside that stipulated in their permits. Anyone working or living on Bonaire illegally who does not meet these deadlines faces immediate deportation.

Port Call reports that there are an estimated 700 foreigners without valid permits living on Bonaire. As of May, 1998, the Labor Department said there were 2006 legal foreign workers living on Bonaire, making up about 40% of the total work force.

If you have questions about either of these issues, please contact either the Lt. Governor's office or the Labor Office - both can be reached via the central island government number, 5330.

For the week of July 6 - 12, 1998, our news items are:

Bonare Twin Cinema News & Features - July 9-15, 1998
Bonaire Twin Cinema is located in the heart of Kralendijk next to the Exito Bakery and behind the Cultimara Supermarket. Starting Thursday, July 9, Bonaire Twin Cinema will be offering the following film features (NaFl. 10.- for all normal features):

“U.S. Marshals” - NEW this week!

    - Nightly 7:45PM and 10:30PM

Tommy Lee Jones is back, as the relentless, canny U.S. Marshal first seen in the blockbuster "The Fugitive". In U.S. Marshals, Jones' character is in pursuit of a brilliant terrorist on the run, played by Wesley Snipes. As a fugitive from justice with everything to lose, this suspect isn't coming in the easy way, and certainly isn't playing by the book, pulling some amazing stunts to try and stay free. (Rated PG-13, Action Suspense, 133 minutes). See http://www.usmarshals.com for details.

“Home Alone 3” - Back Again!

    - Matinees: Sat. & Sun. at 1:00PM and 3:15PM

    - Nightly at 5:30PM

Only one person can stop a high tech gang of black marketeers. Meet eight year old Alex Pruit. When a pesky team of bad guys invade his neighborhood, he's the last line of defense. Alex has his own surveillance tools, a carefully mapped out strategy, courage, the chicken pox... and he's Home Alone! (Rated PG, Comedy, 103 minutes). See http://www.ha3.com for details (requires Shockwave plug-in).

“Godzilla”

    - Nightly at 7:00PM and 10:00PM

Godzilla is back! And this time he's heading for New York City! The film's hero, Nick Tatopoulos (played by Matthew Broderick) goes from studying radioactive earthworms to trying to find ways to foil Godzilla's rampages. Come see the movie that the L.A. Times says "delivers unpretentious fun with a blithe spirit". Size DOES Matter. (For the movie historians among you, Godzilla first appeared before a horrified Japan in 1954 when the monster reduced Tokyo to rubble on the silver screen. Since then, Godzilla has returned time to time to do battle with a number of adversaries, including Radon, Mothra, and even King Kong.) (Rated PG-13, Action Thriller, CinemaScope, 139 minutes). See http://www.godzilla.com for more details.
