Bonaire E-News - This Week
November 24 - December 8, 1998

This part of the InfoBonaire Web site features the contents of our special Bonaire E-NewsTM weekly e-mail news broadcast. To be added to our Bonaire E-News mailing list, please send a message to add-news@InfoBonaire.com. This issue covers November 24 - December 8, 1998.

Please note that this is a special two-week issue of the Bonaire E-News, as the editors are currently off-island.  Weekly publication of the E-News will resume on December 9th.

This week's Bonaire E-News articles are:

Brasa Dey

On Sunday, November 29th, the Foundation "Mietie Makandra" will be hosting the third annual Brasa Dey event in Wilhelmina Park from 11:00am until 8:00pm.  Brasa Dey is a celebration of the Surinamese "Day of Embraces", and features Surinamese cultural dress shows, music, choral singing, cultural dancing, a flea market, art, and exotic Surinamese-Bonairian and Dutch food.  Everyone is welcome to attend and participate.

Getting to Bonaire - From Europe

Over the last few months, reports have been trickling in that European visitors to Bonaire are increasingly having major problems booking direct flights to Bonaire.  Certainly, part of the problem is the recent termination of one of the two direct weekly flights from Amsterdam to Bonaire, combined with the fact that many tourists don't want to tag on another 2 to 8 hours of travel time to get to Bonaire via a connection through Curacao.  And, ALM's recently initiated pilot's work slowdown isn't helping the matter.  On top of that, there are significant restrictions on who can book alledgedly available seats on the special Sobelair charter from Brussels arranged by the Van der Valk consortium which owns the Plaza Resorts on Bonaire and Curacao, and at present, no KLM flights to Bonaire are available at all in travel agent computers from April, 1999, corraborating a story in last week's Port Call that it appears that KLM has not committed to any direct flights for next summer.

We brought these issues up with Lydia Haveman, the manager of the European office (based in Holland) of the Tourism Corporation of Bonaire, and she admits that these problems are not new, and that she and her organization are trying to resolve the situation.  Below are excerpts of an e-mail interview we conducted with Lydia of TCB Europe:

E-News: It appears that travel agents in European countries outside of Holland cannot book _direct_ flights to Bonaire on the KLM Amsterdam->Bonaire flight via their computers.

TCBE: Starting this month, we only have one direct flight to Bonaire.  On this flights are blocked the allotments and guaranteed seats.  A few weeks ago we checked this flight with our travel agency and indeed the flight was completely sold out.  Could not be booked at least by other operators than the ones who were guaranteeing the seats.  This morning however, we re-checked the situation of the Bonaire Thursday flight and on most all flights there is now space with the exception of dec.10 and 17 and 24.  (on dec.24 only bus.class available.) They checked for us from today through February 25.  This means that also other European countries can book on this flight.  If people want to book now for the summer, they have to go via Curacao.

E-News : It's also rumored that KLM is now starting to charge for dive baggage as checked bags.

TCBE: The 10 kilo free baggage for dive equipment is indeed canceled by KLM.  This is their new policy on international level.  [This also applies] for sports such as diving, but also golf, windsurfing, etc.  [and their respective equipment.] For the Netherlands they have been flexible with some dive [tour] operators whereby they can get the free 10 kilo's authorized.  This is only when they book on their tour operator net tariffs which includes air-land.  Not [available] on individual passenger (seat only) tariffs.

E-News: And, we've heard that travel agents are unable to get seats on the direct flight from Belgium that the Van der Valks said would have seats for sale - the flight just isn't listed in the computers for travel agents to access.

TCBE : This is a chartered flight and fully guaranteed by Van der Valk and therefore sold through their network [Editor's Note: The Van der Valk family, in addition to running the worldwide chain of Plaza resorts, also operates the Van der Valk Travel Company in Holland].  Travel Agents cannot get this flight on their screens at this moment.  Van der Valk has however selected a list of travel agents who can sell their seats.  This has to be done through Van der Valk who has to control the inventory since they are responsible for the flight.  They work with the direct public as well for seat-only and the numbers per flight vary.  It seems that they are trying very hard to get a second rotation of Sobelair from Brussels to Bonaire/Curacao.  If this is the case, there will be increased possibilities for ethnic travel and for packages to other hotels as well sold through other Tour Operators.  This would be great.  We do observe that travel agents are selling this since they promote these packages in the newspapers.

While the overall picture on direct flights to Bonaire is less than rosy at present, it certainly seems like some efforts are being made with positive results.  For those European tourists and Bonaireans living in Europe wishing to come to Bonaire, there is always the possibility of flying via the U.S.  or via Curacao, providing they want to deal with the added time, hassles, and expense of such connections.  We'll keep you posted.

Getting to Bonaire - from Canada & the U.S.

The travel picture from North America is far brighter.  E-News reader and Bonaire condo owner Anne Thomson has been working hard with a Canadian tour operator, Squba Holidays, to get Canadians to Bonaire more directly than via the Air ALM shuffle in Miami or Atlanta.  The result is a weekly Canadian charter leaving from Toronto to Curacao starting December 20th, with an add-on to Bonaire.  This would not have happened without the dedication of Anne and Greg Woodworth at Squba Holiday, both of whom are very big fans of Bonaire, and should provide an excellent opportunity for more Canadians to visit Bonaire regularly.  This is important because last year's tourism figures show a marked decrease in visits to Bonaire by Canadians.  Anyone interested in the details of this charter should send Greg at Squba Holidays a message at mailto:squba@sympatico.ca.

For the U.S., another major U.S.  tour operator has started listing Bonaire as a destination they will carry during high season.  TNT Tours, based in Massachusetts is offering Bonaire air and land packages via Curacao.  These packages will run from January through April (about four months). Similarly, GWV will resume its direct weekly charter flights from Boston to Bonaire and on to Curacao starting in January as well.  Both tour operators work exclusively via travel agents.

We are still waiting for confirmation that Air Jamaica will start flying twice a week from Montego Bay directly to Bonaire, and have been attempting to get verification from Divi that their charter service from New York to Aruba and on to Bonaire is still being arranged.  But, so far, no new news to report on this front.

40 Hour Work Week

The Parliament of the Netherlands Antilles last Thursday unanimously approved the law that stipulates a 40-hour work week in the Netherlands Antilles.  It is the maximum amount of hours that employees are supposed to work, and gives them the right to two days off per week.  It's not yet been decided when the law will come into effect.  (courtesy of Port Call)

While a 5-day, 40 hour work week (or less) is common in other parts of the world, the Netherlands Antilles - Curacao and Bonaire in particular - are suffering from increased unemployment.  It appears to be the hope of the Parliament that reducing the work week from five and a half or six days to just five days a week will result in businesses hiring additional staff to fill in the hours previously worked by existing employees.  However, with a number of large businesses in the Netherlands Antilles already teetering on the economic edge of bankruptcy, this law, when put into effect, could make the situation worse instead of better, since there is significant economic overhead and impact associated with the hiring and retention of new employees under Antillean labor laws.  Time will tell.

Please send e-mail to mailto:recycling@infobonaire.com with details if you know of any on-island recycling effort.

Quick Takes

- Cargo Clearing. A new cargo clearing business, aptly named Cargo Clearing & Services Bonaire has moved into the former home of BonTiki - on the corner north of Restaurant Klein Bonaire. They can be contacted at 4433 or mailto:ccsb@bonairelive.com.

- Dive Clean-Up Addition. In last week's Bonaire E-News article about the first monthly underwater clean-up, we unfortunately neglected to mention that Buddy Dive, Green Submarine, and Toucan Divers (Plaza Resort) all donated tanks for use during the clean-up. Their contribution was greatly appreciated!

- BONHATA Meeting. Just a reminder: On November 30th, at 5pm in the conference room at Captain Don's Habitat, BONHATA - the Bonaire Hotel and Tourism Association, will be holding its Annual General Assembly. The sole purpose of the meeting is to elect a new Board of Directors. Only BONHATA members whose dues are paid up may vote. Nomination forms for the elections are available from BONHATA at 5134, FAX: 8534, e-mail: info@bonhata.org. BONHATA members who cannot attend are being asked to submit proxies so that a quorum can be met, with such proxies also available from BONHATA. Port Call also reports that the Plaza Resort has withdrawn from BONHATA, but no comment was available prior to press time.

- Food King . A new supermarket opened this past Sunday on Kaya Korona in the old Korona Supermarket building. It is named the Food King Supermarket. There have been long waits to check out because they are still computerizing their prices. (Port Call)

- Klein Bonaire. There are indications that the possible acquisition of Klein Bonaire for the purpose of maintaining it as a national park may be proceeding between the Government and the Klein Bonaire Development Corporation.  We will report as soon as negotiation results are made public. (Port Call)

- Trade Zone. A Bonaire Free Trade Zone has been approved by the Island Council. The majority of the zone is located on the landward side of the main road leading to Pink Beach, just south of Lighthouse Point. Materials manufactured or trans-shipped inside the zone will be free of customs duties and import/export taxes. The Zone is expected to provide increased employment and business diversification for the island. The first businesses are to be an import/export firm and a pharmaceuticals manufacturer. Also, contrary to rumors on the Internet earlier this year, no new port will be built in that area (or any other on Bonaire) to support the Free Trade Zone - the existing port facilities have been deemed sufficient. (Port Call)

- Recycling . We were recently asked if any company on Bonaire is currently accepting plastic soda bottles for recycling, now that Consales no longer has recycling bins in place and Bon-Awa has stopped accepting two-liter bottles for reuse in packaging its juices. So, the question to our readers is: Do any of you know of anyone on Bonaire accepting plastic bottles (or other materials for that matter) for recycling? Please send e-mail to mailto:recycling@infobonaire.com with details if you know of any on-island recycling effort.

Bonaire E-News - This Week
November 11 - 17, 1998

This part of the InfoBonaire Web site features the contents of our special Bonaire E-NewsTM weekly e-mail news broadcast. To be added to our Bonaire E-News mailing list, please send a message to add-news@InfoBonaire.com. This issue covers November 11 - 17, 1998.

This week's Bonaire E-News articles are

Quite Trashy

These words describe the results of the first monthly underwater clean-up dive organized by Green Submarine and NetTech. A hardy group of nine volunteer divers concerned about the level of trash on Bonaire's reefs brought up over 150 pounds of garbage and trash from the waters of the northern Playa Lechi area, due west of the Green Submarine dive shop.

The inventory of what was found was

  • 2 tires
  • 57 plastic drinking cups
  • 2 plastic plates
  • 1 iron spike
  • 17 lengths of rope
  • 3 empty fishing reels
  • 25 lengths/tangles of fishing line
  • 36 glass bottles
  • 6 Amstel bottles
  • 18 Polar beer cans
  • 5 Heineken beer cans
  • 17 plastic bottles
  • 3 plastic containers
  • 3 lengths of PVC pipe
  • 1 D-cell battery
  • 17 scraps/articles of cloth
  • 4 scraps of paper (non-tissue although that was seen too)
  • 3 candy wrappers
  • 4 glass jars
  • 2 clothes pins
  • 1 snorkel
  • 2 pairs of sunglasses
  • 2 tin can lids
  • 3 individual sneakers/sport shoes
  • 27 miscellaneous scraps/bits of plastic
  • 7 tin cans
  • 6 lengths of wire/cable
  • 2 metal grates
  • 1 video tape
  • 1 cassette tape

Of course, the dive didn't prevent participants from observing life on the reefs which was managing to go about its business even with garbage in its midst. Among the highlights of the critter life were two hunting octopi, a school of boga being chased by aggressive (and apparently hungry) jacks, and an extremely rare (for Bonaire) and beautiful flying gurnard (the picture in the Paul Humann fish book doesn't do the real thing justice).

The monthly underwater clean-up dive happens the first Saturday of each month at Green Submarine at Kaya Playa Lechi 24, starting at 10am and followed by a potluck BBQ for participating divers. Free air is also available. The next clean-up dive is scheduled for December 5th. If you're a concerned diver that wants to help clean-up Bonaire's reefs, call Eric Groenhart at 2929 or Jake Richter at 6773 (e-mail jake@nettech.an) to RSVP (so they can make sure they have enough food at the BBQ).

Old Ships Found in the Aves

According to the Associated Press, explorers led by one Barry Clifford have found a fleet of French warships in shallow waters around the Las Aves islands, 100 miles north of Venezuela (and a popular sailing destination for Bonairean base yachts).

The warships are believed to have crashed against the reefs around one of the Aves islands during a night time chase of several Dutch ships. The French warships were apparently on their way to teach the Dutch settlement of Curacao a lesson.

"It's a spectacular find," said Clifford, who made the world's first discovery of a pirate ship off Cape Cod, Mass. in 1984. "It was kind of like the Museum of Natural History had washed up on a coral reef."

Local fishermen and divers have long seen bits of the wrecks over the years, but this was the first extensive scientific effort to locate and identify all the ships, said Venezuelan explorer Charles Brewer-Carias, who participated in the expedition.

Leeward Inn Reopens

Some of our readers may have heard that the Leeward Inn had closed recently as a result of a tax collection problem with the government. This is true. In fact, about two weeks ago there was an auction of much of the Leeward Inn's furnishings. With the help of several local business people the owners of the Leeward Inn were able to repurchase much of what they needed to continue running their business, however, and we're pleased to report that the Leeward Inn is back in business.

In particular, all you Leeward Inn groupies will be happy to know that The Leeward Inn Café, famous for Papa Don’s pizza and friendly atmosphere, has reopened with a new look. They offer take out orders (phone 5516) and table service in the bar or street side patio. Sample Ditta’s delicious homemade cookies and brownies while you’re waiting. (Courtesy of Port Call)

[Editor's note Earlier this week we partook of several pizza and brownies and our taste buds and tummies were both quite happy.]

Fantome Lost in Hurricane
Fantome, the historic four-masted schooner Windjammer's flagship feared sunk by Hurricane Mitch, spent its last days trying to evade the Hurricane. The ship dropped off its 100 passengers in Belize City Monday, Oct. 26th and set sail with its 31 member crew in an attempt to get out of the path of the storm. The ship was last heard from on Tuesday. Oct 27.

Since Saturday, U.S. Coast Guard planes have scanned more than 120,000 square miles (310,800 sq km) of the Caribbean for the ship, finding only a debris field with two life rafts and seven life vests from the Fantome, and a wooden staircase that might have come from it. It was noted that an additional 3 escape pod boats and 11 life rafts would have been available to the Fantome crew to use if necessary. Also the life vests found were passenger life vests and not the once used by the crew. The search continues for the ship, her other lifeboats, and any survivors.

The Fantome was scheduled to return for a visit to Bonaire on November 18th.

Mitch Then and Now
The devastation in Nicaragua and Honduras left in the wake of Hurricane Mitch may well prove to be one of the deadliest Atlantic Storms on record estimated at as much as 9,000 dead. It may be weeks before the extent of the damage and death is revealed as roads and communications are reestablished with hard it areas. Mitch stalled for three days dumping rain and whipping winds in mountainous mainland as well as on the Bay Islands.

Mitch now reduced in force to a tropical storm with winds around 45 mph, is headed northeast across the Gulf of Mexico. Tropical Storm warnings have been issued for southern Florida and the Keys. See below on Aid to Guanaja/Bay Islands.

Aid to Guanaja/Bay Islands
Guanaja is one of the small "Bay Islands" of Honduras and the population is now living in the few concrete buildings left standing or otherwise exposed to the elements - nothing else has been left standing on this island. After three days of Hurricane Mitch, leaves have been ripped most trees, the birds are gone, and rain has turned what is left into mud. On of the major industries in the Bay Islands, much like Bonaire, is scuba diving. So we'd like to share the following for those that wonder what they can do to help a small groups of islands that are kindred in spirit to our own.

(1) If you can send money, send it NOW. Your contribution will be used to purchase basic survival supplies and get them to Guanaja.
Make checks or money orders payable to "Mission Guanaja" and send them to:

Quick Takes

- Sewage. Dutch consultants presented a plan that would provide for a way of processing sewage from the hotels in the Playa/Hato area (Harbour Village to Habitat) as well as for greater Kralendijk. If approved by the government and the E.U. (which is funding the Nafl. 30+ million construction cost), things could become operational around 2004. Bonairean residents on the sewage system would have to bear the smaller cost of maintenance & operation in the amount of Nafl. 70.- to Nafl. 170.-/month at first (the amount would depend on whether costs would start being covered immediately or if a 5-10 year ramp up would be necessary), ramping to Naf 340 by 2023, per household.

The consultants predict that getting the sewage processing facilities built and put to use here will allow Bonaire to continue with a modest to significant increase in tourism over the next two decades, while if such a sewage treatment system is not put into place, there may well be a steep tourism decline in the next decade because of the nutrient pollution build-up on the reefs, damaging or even destroying Bonaire's top tourism attraction, and that could lead to economic disaster for the island. So, let's keep our fingers crossed and hope that the sewage plan will be approved soon!

-Dive Festival reminder. Week long event starting with the "Taste of Bonaire" on Sunday, November 8th at Wilhelmina Plaza is open to the public. All so don't miss the booking signing by Sylvia Earle on Wednesday, Nov. 11 cost $14 (Nafl.25), profits benefit the Bonaire Marine Park. A complete schedule can be found at http://www.infobonaire.com/html/DiveFestival98.html

Residents of Bonaire (proof required in the form of a cedula - local ID) will enjoy a discounted admission fee to the Dive Festival of NAfl. 90 for the entire week, or NAfl. 18 (US$10) per day. Non-resident fees are US$125 for the week, and US$25/day. Wednesday is the highlight (in our opinion) of the information and educational sessions with an evening presentation by renowned oceanographer and current National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, Dr. Sylvia Earle. Following Dr. Earle's presentation at the Plaza resort, there will be a book signing at the Tipsy Seagull, featuring Dr. Earle outstanding book, "Sea Change". The airline also will accept passengers who are not staying at one of Van der Valk properties. (KLM flew its last Tuesday flight to Bonaire last week.)

- Sunset Beach Auction . Last week, contents of all the guest rooms at the Sunset Beach Hotel were auctioned off, confirming that Sunset Beach Hotel will not reopen anytime soon.
