Bonaire E-News - This Week This week's Bonaire E-News articles are:
In case you haven't heard, we have three storms in blazing around the Caribbean.
Hurricane Georges has ripped a trail of devastation across Guadeloupe, St. Kitts, St. Croix, Antigua, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic, among other places.
Reports indicate that at this point as many as 8 people have died as a result of the storm while thousands of other have been left homeless as high winds carried off roofs and even houses.
Georges is now over Haiti and heading towards Cuba, the Bahamas, and southern Floriday. Makes one glad to be on Bonaire, where Hurricanes can only be found on
TV and in the newspapers! Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Ivan is off in the middle of the Atlantic bothering now one. However, Tropical Storm Jeanne is over by the
Cape Verde islands and heading westerly, well north of Bonaire's latitude, fortunately. It's unclear if Ivan or Jeanne will turn into hurricanes, but if they do, Jeanne could pose some harm to the northern Caribbean and the U.S. Late last week, we attended both days of the Bonaire Marketing Meeting, an annual
conference dedicated to the state of Bonaire tourism, and learned many things. The conference started off with some sobering statistics on the rate of increase (or rather
decrease) of tourism. Overall, tourism to the island dropped by only 4% from 1996 to 1997, while the first half of 1998 seems to be holding steady to the same period in
1997. What has been troubling people involved in Bonaire's tourism industry (which is most of Bonaire) is that we've seen a large decrease of air traffic to Bonaire in
recent months, not the least of which was the cessation of service by Air Aruba. But, the biggest drop is still to come when KLM reduces its flights from two 747s a week to just one.
So, while bemoaning the fact that we will have lots of rooms to fill, but no way to get people here, the final shock on Thursday, the first day of the conference (graciously
hosted by Harbour Village, by the way), was that Bonaire's entire North American advertising budget was a paltry $75,000, which is barely enough to buy a full page in
a popular publication such as Conde Nast Traveler. That budget prevents Bonaire from making more people aware of all that Bonaire has to offer, because the public
relations agency used in the U.S. can't afford to issue press releases over the wire services (which are widely read on the Internet and used by countless publications as
the basis of stories), and the ad agency can't place many ads at all in key publications for Bonaire tourism. With a tourism theme of "Dive Plus", Bonaire needs to invest in
more advertising and public relations than it currently has the budget for. The second and last day of the conference brought attendees out of their previous
day induced doldrums, with presentations by Air ALM, Air Aruba, the Bonaire Airlift Committee, a surprise announcement by Divi Resorts, and a tentative offer by local government.
Air ALM announced that they will be increasing the direct flights from the U.S. and Aruba offered to Bonaire next year. Additionally, they will be reworking their service
center and pricing structures to allow people to get to Bonaire in a more affordable fashion. All this is part of Air ALM's recent restructuring and semi-privatization.
Air Aruba also announced that it has become privatized, with a 70% investment by Venezuelan airline Aserca, and that as part of that new management effort, will be
expanding its operations to include 2 more direct flights to Bonaire from Aruba (up to 4 weekly flights from the current 2), as well as reestablishing themselves in the U.S.
with flights from (and to) Newark, Miami, Tampa, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Houston. There will also be additional flights from various South American cities, including
Bogota. However, the biggest news is that Air Aruba, Aserca, and Continental Airlines announced an alliance which will allow travelers to book flights and redeem
frequent flyer miles through one carrier on another. This will make it significantly easier for U.S. travelers to get to the ABC islands (and Venezuela).
And, it doesn't end there. The Bonaire Airlift Committee, chaired by Lt.Governor Hart, with membership from all major tourism groups and businesses on Bonaire,
announced a deal with Air Jamaica to start flying Fokker 28 planes (72 passengers) from Montego Bay, Jamaica direct to Bonaire and back, twice a week (Wednesdays
and Saturdays) starting at the end of January. As Montego Bay has direct flights to and from major U.S. cities, this is a real bonus. However, it should be noted that this
deal is not yet final, as it still requires approval from the Central Government. Governor Hart and Plaza Resort also announced that there will be a regular weekly
charter added from either Holland or Belgium to help replace the soon to be missing KLM flight. Finally, in flight news, the representative from Divi Resorts announced that they are
working on a weekly charter flight from New York to Aruba and Bonaire to help satisfy the needs of their time-share owners. This flight will be also be made available
to others who are not staying at Divi Resorts on either of the islands, with a target price being around US$500 round-trip. Divi also announced that it has committed at
least US$1 million to the restoration of the Divi Flamingo property, saying that Divi Resorts is committed to Bonaire. Renovations should start by the end of the year.
The closing session was a panel of several members of the Bonaire government, where an offer was made to significantly increase the advertising budget for Bonaire
around the world, providing local businesses upped their advertising expenditures via the use of co-op advertising. We think this is a good move on Bonaire's part.
The panel was also asked as to what's being done to help preserve Bonaire's largest and most critical tourist attraction, namely the reef. It was mentioned that a series of
meetings regarding the installation of sewage treatment facilities was recently completed, and that Bonaire is on the track for a short-term (2 year) solution, as well as a more permanent one.
In our opinion, sewage treatment is a very necessary step to prevent excess nutrients from causing excessive growth of algae from choking our corals specifically, and
upsetting our fragile reef ecosystem in general. However, time, effort, and funds also need to be dedicated to more diver education, policing for reef violators (see the
related clean-up item below), and local education about the importance of keeping our reefs healthy - both in terms of pollution as well as in terms of habitat destruction
and over fishing. However, these aren't "sexy" topics when compared with publicity and marketing. In any event, by the end of the conference, it became apparent that outside of finding
ways to help the reef, they biggest problem Bonaire's tourism industry was going to have in 1999 was filling all the extra airline seats that have all of a sudden become available. Certainly a great ending! Fundashon Tene Boneiru Limpi ("Keep Bonaire Clean") reports that the Bonaire
Clean-Up this last weekend was quite successful, with less trash reported along the roadsides and underwater. Nonetheless, 2,832 bags of trash were collected by
2,200 people in 66 different groups and organizations. 136 divers cleaned underwater off Playa, and brought up more than 10 cubic meters of sushi. (We
personally contributed to this effort with the help of Habitat and dive buddy Bas van Ham, bringing up a small stove, a large empty barrel/drum, a car battery, a boat or
truck battery, and several bags loaded to overfilling with beer bottles and beer cans). 73 people joined the Sea Turtle Club to help clean Klein Bonaire. These people
brought back 260 bags of trash from the deserted but popular island in Bonaire's lee. The winners of the bicycles in the lottery were: Philberon Albertus, Jermin St. Jago, Daphne Paparis, Grupo Hisa Buta, Grupo di TELBO.
Tene Boneiru Limpo thanks all that participated and hopes that if people become more conscious of the amazing amounts of trash improperly disposed of on Bonaire
and dispose of it as it should instead, perhaps we won't have as much to collect next year.
Elly Albers, known to many as the former caretaker of stray dogs, cats, and even a horse at the Bonaire Animal Shelter is offering dog classes. More specifically, she's
actually going to be teaching dog owners how to control and communicate with their four legged friends. Beginner classes will start on Thursday, September 24th at
7:00pm at the Bonaire Tourism Training Center near The Sandwich Factory. The first lesson will cover dog training theory (sans dogs). After this, there will be 15 lessons,
one a week, in the parking lot of the 77 General Store. The last class of the 17 week course will end with an examination and the course cost is NAfl. 150.- Elly is also
teaching an advanced dog training class, which starts on Monday, September 28th at 7:30pm at the 77 General Store parking lot. The advanced class is only for those
pets and their owners who have completed a beginner's course in the subject, and will run for 16 weeks (one hour a week) and will also cost NAfl. 150.- You can reach Elly via Jerry Schnabel's e-mail at Bonaire Twin Cinema is located in the heart of Kralendijk next to the Exito Bakery
and behind the Cultimara Supermarket. Starting Thursday, September 24, Bonaire Twin Cinema will be offering the following film features (NaFl.10.- for all normal features): --------------------------------- An animated movie, The Magic Sword is set a thousand years ago in the British Isles, when King Arthur was newly crowned and the land was filled with brave knights
doing noble deeds. The story revolves around Kayley, a lively and strong-willed girl whose dream is to become a Knight of the Round Table like her late father, Sir
Lionel. After the evil and power-mad Ruber and his vicious ally, the Griffin, capture King Arthur's magical sword Excalibur, Kayley embarks on a dangerous quest to retrieve the sword and save Camelot. See ---------------------------------
In our avid history of movie going, the Lethal Weapon series is one of very few
where each new movie in the series has been as good, if not better, than the previous one. We hear that trend continues with Lethal Weapon 4, which brings back Mel
Gibson and Danny Glover as Riggs and Murtaugh. Joining them are Joe Pesci (LW2), Rene Russo (LW3), talented comedian Chris Rock, and Hong Kong action
star Jet Li. In LW4 the team tries to solve a series of crimes involving the smuggling of immigrants and counterfeiting. (Rated R, Action Thriller, CinemaScope, 121 minutes). See ---------------------------------
Bruce Willis leads an all-star cast on a heroic journey to stop an asteroid the size of Texas from crashing into the Earth. (Rated PG-13, Action thriller, CinemaScope, 150min.) ---------------------------------
Mulan is the latest in a colorful and entertaining series of animated musical movies from Disney, featuring the story of a spirited Chinese girl who attempts to save her
father from certain death in war by taking his place, disguised as a man. [InfoBonaire rating - 4 out 5 - great Disney movie for adults and older children alike - younger
children under the age of 5 may be a little scared at times.] (Rated G, Animation, 88 minutes) See --------------------------------- Kids Free Movie Club is sponsored by Mega FM and Bonaire Travel & Tours --------------------------------- --------------------------------- Also, check out the Dinner and a Movie special offered by Bonaire Twin Cinema
and De Tuin Restaurant. Nafl. 35.- gets you dinner, beer or soda, popcorn, and a ticket to a movie. The Bonaire Twin Cinema Box Office opens nightly at 4:30PM, and no reservations
are required. Tickets are only available at the box office. Questions about the movies? Call Bonaire Twin Cinema at 2400 (Noon to closing everyday), FAX: 8010, or send an e-mail to
Each week, we'll list the addresses of new Bonaire Web sites that we come across. If you have a new Bonaire Web site and want to make sure people know about it, send a message to InfoBonaire's Web address of the week: (Okay, so it's a Curacao oriented Web site, but it does offer a comprehensive set of links to local area weather as well as information about the Caribbean in general -
one warning - the satellite weather map takes a little while to load). - Regatta Time!
The 31st annual Bonaire Sailing Regatta will be held October 4th through the 10th. The Regatta headquarters will be located at the Sunset Beach
Hotel, and sailing vessels in all categories are welcome to participate. There will also be a special Regatta Garden Restaurant opened in the courtyard of the
Bestuurskantoor, offering gourment dining, with advanced dinner reservations available. Contact TCB at 8322 or mailto:tcbproduct@bonairelive.com for more
information on this. More Regatta information will be published in next week's Bonaire E-News, but those with specific questions can contact Byron Tromp at - Sand Dollar Management. Sand Dollar Condominium Resort has announced that
Delno Tromp has been appointed as the General Manager of the Resort. His previous position was Assistant General Manager/Director of Marketing. Sand Dollar Condominium Resort is the only Resort on the Island where all managerial
positions are held by Bonaireans. - Nikon SB-103 Update. In last week's issue we announced that Nikon USA was issuing a recall on all SB-103 underwater strobes purchased in the U.S.A.
We have since learned that this recall is worldwide, and that each regional Nikon office will process the people in its region who have SB-103 strobes to trade in.
Unfortunately, we were not able to find out which regional office covers Bonaire, although suspect that it is the U.S. office. See - Scuba Instructor. Professional Motivations Training Institute have announced that
a PADI IDC (Instructor Development Course) will be held at Captain Don's Habitat starting October 17th. The IDC runs through October 26th, followed by two days of
the PADI Instructor Examination (IE), and optional Specialty Instructor classes after that. To participate in the IDC you must be a certified Divemaster. For additional prequisites and fees, see PMTI's Web site at - Power of E-mail
. We'd like to note that this week's Bonaire E-News mailing was composed and mailed out while traveling in Germany. It never ceases to amaze us how versatile and global e-mail really is... It's back home to Bonaire next week,
however. This "Bonaire E-News"(tm) e-mail was provided as a completely free service of InfoBonaire, "Bonaire's Home on the Internet"(tm). |
Bonaire E-News - This Week This week's Bonaire E-News articles are:
During the two dives we made last week, we failed to see any signs of the coral
spawning previously written about in the Bonaire E-News. However, it appears we missed out. Bonaire E-News reader (and renown Bonaire Naturalist for Sand Dollar Dive & Photo) Jerry Ligon has this to share (edited to fit):
"Coral Spawning, Saturday night, September 12th, exactly 6 days after full moon, was spectacular. At Sand Dollar, we scheduled coral spawn dives for the 4th, 5th,
6th, and 7th days after full moon. This was my personal best reproductive event (as a non-participant). It seemed all species of Star Coral (Montastrea sp.) were
committing impeachable acts. Quite humorous were the normally-shy brittle stars, who were out in the open snatching as many of the nutritious egg-packets as their 5
arms could hold, except that that left no appendages to engage in transport (I actually witnessed one brittle star fall off the steep incline of a Montastrea annularis
coral head because it could not find the need to use the appendages for anything other than gathering the tremendous numbers of recently released egg-packets. A
chimpanzee with a plethoric overload of bananas comes to mind. I also witnessed, for the first time for me, pelagic tunicates, right in my light, enjoying this contagious
orgy taking place. It took place after 9:30 pm. Many good photos were taken, which we will be willing to present at a slide presentation for anyone interested in seeing what they missed."
The Tourism Corporation of Bonaire is inviting all tourism related business on the island to participate in this year's Bonaire Marketing Meetings, scheduled for this
coming Thursday and Friday, September 17th and 18th. The theme of this year's meeting is "Regaining Market Share in the Target Markets". The location of the
meeting was not made available prior to press time, but all interested parties are encouraged to contact Diana Gevers at TCB at
If you're an underwater photographer using Nikon equipment, in particular Nikon SB-103 underwater strobes, please be aware that Nikon Inc. has issued a complete
recall on all SB-103 strobes purchased in the U.S.A. Apparently they have had one report of a possible problem with gas buildup within the strobe causing the front lens
and flash tube unit to "project off the front" of the unit. (We interpret that to mean that the SB-103's front can blow off in exactly the right conditions). Nikon advises
all SB-103 users to immediately stop using these strobes. Here's a bonus, however: Instead of applying some sort of fix to the SB-103 you send in, Nikon will send out brand spanking new SB-105 strobes to replace the
faulty SB-103s. SB-105 strobes have more power, greater coverage, and include a slave mode, so this is quite a deal. However, please note that it is likely that Nikon
will require the SB-103 strobes shipped to them to originate from a US address, and will need them to be returned to a US address (we were unable to confirm this
as their phone was busy all day). Nikon's recall notice said they will ship out SB-105s as they become available, which could mean a significant backlog if everyone sends in their SB-103s.
Details of the SB-103 recall can be found at: Pam Teitel and her Professional Motivations Training Institute have announced that a
PADI IDC (Instructor Development Course) will be held at Captain Don's Habitat starting October 17th. The IDC runs through October 26th, followed by two days
of the PADI Instructor Examination (IE), and optional Specialty Instructor classes after that. To participate in the IDC you must be a certified Divemaster. For additional prequisites and fees, see PMTI's Web site at Bonaire Twin Cinema is located in the heart of Kralendijk next to the Exito Bakery

Bonaire E-News - This Week
A Return Ticket Home Returning home to Bonaire from the U.S. a couple of days ago, we encountered a new set of questions during check-in. Normally, you get asked things like "Did you pack your own bags?", or "Have your bags been in your possession the whole time?". Well, for travelers in the U.S. who have U.S. passports or birth certificates as their proof of ability to travel abroad, there's a new question: "Do you have a return ticket or proof of residence in your destination?" This question didn't come up during travel a few weeks ago, and according to the airlines (this was experienced both with American Airlines and ALM), a U.S. government agency has ordered airlines to start asking this particular question. However, no airline was clear on which government agency it was (we were told, by different people that it was the F.A.A., Immigration, State Department, or Customs). And, this line of questioning is not limited to people traveling to Bonaire. According to airline counter staff it applies to all international destinations. The lesson here is that if you or a friend are visiting Bonaire as a tourist (i.e., you're not a resident here), and are U.S. citizens, you need to show proof of possessing a return ticket to the U.S. No more open ended trips, it seems, which certainly falls in line with Bonaire's recent statements about cracking down on people who are on Bonaire illegally (more than three contiguous months for visitors from most Western countries). It's unclear whether this new airline questioning will apply to Bonaire visitors from other countries, such as Holland, but please send us an e-mail at mailto:news@infobonaire.com if you encounter such questions outside the U.S. as well. KonTiki Beachclub Somehow we missed it, but a few weeks ago, yet another new restaurant joined the ranks of Bonaire's culinary institutions. The KonTiki Beachclub has replaced the Oasis restaurant located at the Lac Bay Resort. KonTiki offers moderately priced dishes, with a full range of offerings, including a cold cucumber mint soup, salmon carpaccio, a special fish stew, yogurt parfaits, fruit shakes, and even a child's menu. KonTiki is owned and operated by Miriam and Martin van Bekkum, and is open 11:30 to 22:00 for lunch and dinner daily except Mondays. For reservations call 5369 or e-mail mailto:kontiki@bonairelive.com . Keep Bonaire Clean More details have come in on Bonaire's annual clean-up, which is being held the weekend of September 19th and 20th all over Bonaire. First, the reef cleanup is now firmly scheduled for Saturday, September 19th, at 9:30am, and will involve all the major dive operators on the island, with boat rides for clean-up participants provided by the dive operators. Debris collected from the reef and beaches will be logged and reported to the Center for Marine Conservation in Washington, D.C. Most of the clean-up is slated to take place in the Playa area, and CURO (Council of Underwater Resort Operators) is asking all boaters to be aware of the dive boats flying the red and white dive flags, indicating divers might well be in the water nearby. A briefing on how to determine what is garbage and what isn't in terms of the marine environment will be offered as well, according to Bonaire Marine Park Manager, Kalli de Meyer. For details on how to participate, contact Marion Wilson, CURO's president and the manager of Harbour Village's dive operation, Great Adventures Bonaire, at phone: 7500. Contact Corine Gerharts at 8399 or mailto:corine@bonairelive.net for beach cleanup participation. The second news items is that Fundashon Tene Boneiru Limpi, the organization behind the clean-up is asking everyone on Bonaire, in preparation for the island-wide clean-up, to start at home. "We want everyone to clean their yards from now until September 18th", said Elsmarie Beukenboom, president of the organization. "Then, on the 19th and 20th of September, we will work together to clean the roads and public areas." Elsmarie added that yard clean-up should include getting rid of old appliances, vehicles, or any other items sitting and collecting dirt and deteriorating, including styrofoam, paper, and plastic stuck in bushes, cactus, or fences. Anyone who has large garbage items to throw away through September 18th can arrange for a free pick-up by Selibon just by called them at 8159 and telling them what type of garbage they have to be picked up. Note that loose pieces should be bundled together or boxed. Finally, a clarification. Last year, when prize mountain bikes were given out, it apparently turned out that such bikes were for children. This year, five winning lottery ticket holders (you get a free lottery ticket for each bag of garbage you turn in) will win a mountain bike or BMX bike - selected for them based on their size, which means adults will get bikes that fit. For further details, contact Elsmarie Beukenboom at 8322 or mailto:elsmarie@bonairenet.com or call Lieske Keukens at 5584 or mailto:et@bonairelive.net . ABC School The ABC Foundation is a non-profit organization which has a goal of insuring the early development of English language skills among children here on Bonaire. The ABC Foundation is working to achieve this goal via a literature-based instructional program, dealing with building both reading and writing skills for children, ages 5 - 12. The teaching comes into being as part of something called the ABC School, which started offering classes about a year ago. Last year, the program had 18 students in four different levels. It should be noted that the ABC School is intended to develop existing English skills, and is not set up to teach English from scratch. This year, the ABC School resumes classes on October 17th. Class is held every Saturday, from 9am to 12:30pm, and classes continue through May of 1999. The primary educator/teacher is Kitty Handschuh, and classes are held in the Trans World Radio classroom. There is a fee for sending your children to the ABC School, with said fee depending on the number of children enrolled. The ABC School is looking for a second teacher to aid in their efforts. Also, monetary donations are being sought. If you can help in either capacity, or if you have more questions, contact either Corine Gerharts at 8399, mailto:corine@bonairelive.net , or Ann Louise Tuke at 5592, mailto:samur@bonairelive.net . Bonaire Twin Cinema News & Features - September 10 - 16, 1998 Bonaire Twin Cinema is located in the heart of Kralendijk next to the Exito Bakery
and behind the Cultimara Supermarket. Starting Thursday, September 10, Bonaire Twin Cinema will be offering the following film features (NaFl. 10.- for all normal features):
* Wear a home-made Zorro mask and win a free ticket to Zorro - call for details * Also, check out the Dinner and a Movie special offered by Bonaire Twin Cinema and De Tuin Restaurant.
